Tension Set Diamond Rings

Tension set diamond rings are very popular nowadays. There are actually four companies in the world that make tension set products. Among the four companies, two of which can be found in the United States and one of the two is Gelin Abaci. Gelin Abaci is the largest manufacturer of tension set products in the world. The concept of tension setting in which they currently using for their extraordinary products has long been known for more than 40 years.

Tension set diamond rings in platinum, yellow, or white gold are manufactured with special alloys by a sophisticated technique that enables the material to retain its memory. Depending on the style, tension set products have anywhere from 65 to 95 pounds pressure on the center diamond. The precious metals are specially hardened and this is accomplished by pressure or by thermal treatment. The special treatment to the precious metal results on the precious metal having a certain springiness, which will grip the diamond without the need of a bezel or claws. The diamond is basically pressed to the girdle on each side by the ends of the ring. The visual effect of the ring can be absolutely stunning. Each metal end has a small grove called the seat, into which a small section of the girdle fits.

Tension set diamond rings are questioned for its security. It's expected considering the description of it. However, tension set ring is considered to be safe, even safer than four prong settings as prongs can get loose over the years. As much as the diamond being prone to nicking or breakage, this is absolutely not true. Diamonds can be damaged in any setting, but the tension set mountings can actually cover more of the girdle compared to other types of settings, therefore, resulting in a little better protection than some prong settings. A Prong setting can be bent back by only a little bit of pressure against a hard surface or point or tool, but the tension set are held over a much wider area of the girdle and the entire setting must be sprung away from the stone to actually remove it.

Since the whole point of tension setting is that the metal is highly conditioned to a spring condition, slight deflections that might, under certain circumstances, spring the setting apart a bit, don't hurt as the setting instantly springs back to its original position. This is due to its being engineered as a compression spring. It actually does not need to exert much force on the gem. There is another fact that most people believed to be out of the question and that is, they thought that tension set diamond rings can't be resized, but there is no truth to it. Tension set rings can easily be sized, whether one ring size up or size down.
